Progress on the design of metal-organic framework based separation membranes

Our group proposed a new strategy for modular customization and regulation of MOF separation membranes. The membrane structure consists of two parallel modules, one is the MOF module, which acted as molecular sieve modules, providing intrinsic gas pathways to predominate accurate separation, while ultrathin, low-permeable polyamide (PA) module played a role in thorough defect elimination. Under the guidance of this strategy, the MOF separation membrane can be customized by randomly replacing the MOF module, and the high performance MOF separation membrane can be quickly produced. As a proof of concept, four MOFs with different pore/channel size and functionalities (NH2-Zn2Bim4, Ni(HBTC)(4,4'-bipy), MOF-74(Mg), MIL-68(Al)) were selected to construct four kinds of MOF separation membranes. The prepared MOF separation membrane exhibited adjustable separation performance according to the difference of pore channels of the selected MOF module, in which NH2-Zn2Bim4 membrane had a H2/CO2 mixture separation factor of 1656 and H2 permeability of 964 GPU. Taking advantage of this strategy, separation performance can be manipulated by a non-destructive modification separately towards the MOF module. The modified membrane showed a H2/CO2 mixture SF increment of 202% compared to the pristine membrane. This work establishes a universal full-chain demonstration for membrane fabricationseparation validation-microstructure modification and opens an avenue for exclusive customization of membranes for important separations.
